This is a great antique model of HMS Victory, Admiral Lord Nelson's
flagship. Yhe model is mid to late century, painted wood construction
scale model, on stand with plaquette; this model is not quite as
detailed as many of the others but what it lacks in detail it
certainly makes up for in charm and character.
40" long x 18" wide x 66" high with table.
Provenance: Property deaccessioned from an east coast maritime museum.
Other Notes: HMS Victory is the Royal Navy's most famous warship, a
104-gun first-rate ship-of-the-line of the Royal Navy, ordered in
1758, and launched in 1765. She is best known for her role as Lord
Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. She also led
fleets in the American War of Independence, the French Revolutionary
War and the Napoleonic War, and served as flagship at the battles of
Ushant, Cape Spartel, and Cape St Vincent. After 1824, she was
relegated to the role of harbor ship.
In 1922, she was moved to a dry dock at Portsmouth, England, and
preserved as a museum ship. She has been the flagship of the First Sea
Lord since October 2012 and is the oldest commissioned warship in the
world. She has greeted 25 million visitors.
