The Binnacle

The binnacle is a large fixture, usually over 4' that houses the ship's compass. For smaller boats and yachts, the binnacle housing is made of brass, chrome or steel. The compass is usually fastened with a gimbal and the binnacle housing is usually on a sturdy pedestal of mahogany wood with a brass hood to protect the compass.
