Luncheon Plate | Minton | Scalloped Border | J.P. Morgan's Corsair | 1890

Lannan Gallery

Porcelain luncheon plate by Minton made exclusively for J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913). This plate would be used as a side dish or salad plate aboard Morgan's personal and private steam yacht "Corsair". The white porcelain is trimmed in royal blue paint and gold trim accents. The 12 o'clock position shows a hand painted New York Yacht Club burgee crossing staff with the Commodore ensign. Beneath the flags is a flowing banner reading "Flagship". Corsair was flagship of the N.Y.Y.C. during Morgan's tenure as Commodore. This plate and the others for sale in the gallery came from a direct descendant of Morgan himself.
