Framed International Code of Signals Answering Pennant, professionally mounted within a shadow box display. Constructed of alternating red and white vertical linen panels, the pennant retains its original heavy canvas hoist, rope lanyard, and wooden toggle. Used aboard merchant and naval vessels, the Answering Pennant formed an essential part of the International Code of Signals, serving as an acknowledgement that a signal had been seen and understood. It was also used with numeral hoists to indicate a decimal point and, aboard warships, to signify that accompanying signals were to be interpreted according to the International Code of Signals.
When raised alone, this pennant indicated that a signal had been received and understood, acting as the standard acknowledgement between vessels. A well-presented mid-century maritime display piece, ideal for collectors of naval and nautical memorabilia.
