Framed International Code of Signals Charlie (C) maritime signal flag, professionally mounted within a shadow box display. Constructed of blue, white, red, white, and blue horizontal linen stripes, the flag retains its original canvas hoist, rope lanyard, and wooden toggle. When flown alone, the Charlie (C) flag means "Yes" or "Affirmative." It is used to convey a positive response to a question or signal and remains one of the most straightforward and recognizable flags within the International Code of Signals. This example represents an earlier pattern of the Charlie flag, predating the modern version featuring a centered blue square on a white field. The canvas hoist bears the Annin Flag Company "Defiance" label. Annin is America's oldest flag maker. International Code of Signals flags were widely used aboard naval and merchant vessels to communicate standardized navigational, operational, and safety messages before the widespread adoption of radio communications, and they remain an internationally recognized maritime signaling system today.
